When Harry Met Sally
Rob Reiner and Nora Ephron’s romantic classic is both romantic and funny. It bears repeated viewing, as Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal become what initially seems as unlikely lovers. There are the endlessly quotable exchanges, and altogether this is a movie that makes a lasting impact.
Casablanca
Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in what is regarded as one of the all-time great movies. Set against the backdrop of World War II, the story of emotionally bruised bar owner Rick and the return of Ilsa, the old flame is a bittersweet love story in which a sacrificial pay-off only reinforces its emotional impact.
Brief Encounter
Made in the 1940s, this movie is both beautifully romantic, but at the same time melancholic as society deigned at that time that a stable husband is better than a passionate lover. Laura and Alec meet on a train platform, but their connection is scrutinised throughout the film, and the end of the film is both sad and thought-provoking.
True Romance
A crime saga under set in Detroit in which a lonely pop culture geek marries a call girl steals cocaine from her pimp and tries to sell it in Hollywood. Underneath the cocaine, the murders, and Gary Oldman’s dreadlocked Drexl, this script, written by Tarantino has a raw, follows the love story of Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette.
Before Sunset
Following on nine years later from Before Sunrise, this movie catches up with Ethan Hawke’s Jesse and Julie Delpy’s Celine for more walking, talking and romance. The script was written by the cast with their director and appears to have emerged organically, unforced. This is a warm, witty and realistic story of being in love, for better for worse.
Jerry Maguire
Cameron Crowe’s movie is more romantic than it sounds. A sports agent voices a new moral philosophy costs him his job. The new philosophy is put to the test as an independent agent which leads to two classic declarations of love within fifteen seconds: Tom Cruise’s “you complete me” and Renee Zellweger’s “you had me at hello”.
